We achieve our goals through a community proudly working together

Our History

Our church began as a pioneer work that met in the spare bedroom of 27 Mornington Road, Holmewood!

The church purchased the present site on Tibshelf Road from the Coal Board and in May 1949, the first church building of 'Holmewood Assembly of God' was opened. This building was 'second-hand' in that it was a former doctor's surgery that was transplanted from Doe Lea to Holmewood! The present-day church building was opened in September 1966 with the rear hall following in the late 1970s/early 1980s.

In the 80+ years of our church's existence, God has graciously provided us with leaders - who by their unique giftings and personalities - have taken the work forward:

Ps. George Smith (1939-1966)
Ps. Roy Smith (1966-1990)
Ps. John Ford (1990-1996)
Ps. Paul Haywood (1996-2015)
The ALCC Leadership Team (2015)

In 1997, the church was renamed 'Abundant Life Christian Centre' (ALCC). ALCC has always had a reputation for being friendly, community-orientated, Jesus-exalting and a place where the 'fresh winds' of the Holy Spirit are desired, welcomed and experienced. By God's grace, we seek to continue embodying these values, as we journey forward.

Opposite are three snapshots of the congregation through time: 1950s ... 2010 ... 2024. In each picture, the church has grown ... and we are believing for further growth, in the coming years!

Our Leadership Team

ALCC is presently led by a Leadership Team: Les and Elizabeth Roe and Ben Allsop.

Together with the Church Council, they carry the responsibility under God for the whole church and its direction. They have great support from all the church department leaders who are involved in everything we do.

Les and Elizabeth Roe
Senior Leaders

Converted in 1971 as a newly-married couple, Les and Elizabeth have sought to glorify God and serve His church ever since - first at North Wingfield AoG and then at Holmewood AoG (ALCC) from 1994 onwards. Throughout Ps. Haywood's ministry, they served as church elders and continued in leadership when Ps. Haywood retired. Les is passionate about evangelism and mission; Elizabeth carries an anointing for inner-healing/deliverance ministry. We are blessed to have them both!

Ben Allsop
Associate Leader

Ben had a dramatic born-again experience at ALCC aged 13 in 2008 - he quickly lost interest in the PlayStation and couldn't get enough of Jesus, instead! In 2013, Ben served as an intern at International House of Prayer - Kansas City (IHOP-KC) where he grew significantly in his understanding of the Bible in a context of 24/7 prayer, worship and mission. Having served God at AoGs in Clay Cross and Chesterfield, Ben returned to ALCC in 2023 with his wife, Elisha, to support the leadership.

What we Believe

Explore our core beliefs regarding God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the Bible, and the pivotal elements of our faith. These convictions shape every decision we make as a congregation.

  • We believe that the Bible (i.e. the Old and New Testaments excluding the Apocrypha), is the inspired Word of God, the infallible, all sufficient rule for faith and practice.

  • We believe in the unity of the One True and Living God who is the Eternal, Self-Existent “I AM”, Who has also revealed Himself as One being co-existing in three Persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

  • We believe in the Virgin Birth, Sinless Life, Miraculous Ministry, Substitutionary Atoning Death, Bodily Resurrection, Triumphant Ascension and Abiding Intercession of the Lord Jesus Christ and in His personal, visible, bodily return in power and glory as the blessed hope of all believers.

  • We believe in the fall of man, who was created pure and upright, but fell by voluntary transgression.

  • We believe in salvation through faith in Christ, who, according to the Scriptures, died for our sins, was buried and was raised from the dead on the third day, and that through His Blood we have Redemption.

  • This experience is also known as the new birth, and is an instantaneous and complete operation of the Holy Spirit upon initial faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

  • We believe that all who have truly repented and believed in Christ as Lord and Saviour are commanded to be baptised by immersion in water.

  • We believe in the baptism in the Holy Spirit as an enduement of the believer with power for service, the essential, biblical evidence of which is the speaking with other tongues as the Spirit gives utterance.

  • We believe in the operation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the gifts of Christ in the Church today.

  • We believe in holiness of life and conduct in obedience to the command of God.

  • We believe that deliverance from sickness, by Divine Healing is provided for in the Atonement.

  • We believe that all who have truly repented and believe in Christ as Lord and Saviour should regularly participate in Breaking of Bread.

  • We believe in the bodily resurrection of all men, the everlasting conscious bliss of all who truly believe in our Lord Jesus Christ and the everlasting conscious punishment of all whose names are not written in the Book of Life.
